San Francisco based mellow electronic duo, Windsurf’s mini album “Weird Energy” nicely cooled down Japan’s humid hot Summer last year. Dan Judd aka Sorcerer is one-half of the duo. Dan was a former member of a soft rock band Call And Response that was tight with Feist, and formed a cosmic pop band SHOCK in 2011. In late 2012 he released his solo debut single ‘Heaven’, bringing in melodious sense through his band experiences into dance tracks, where his originality is. 

 As Sorcerer, he has released “White Magic” in 2007 and “Neon Leon” in 2008 from Tirk label in London. Also with his creative partner Sam Grawe, they put together “Coastlines” in 2008 as Windsurf from Norway’s Internasjonal. In 2009 he toured Japan, by the help of Kensuke Saito aka 9dw and his label CATUNE. Since then “Step Pyramid / Universal Vision EP” has been a long waited release as Sorcerer.

 Side A ‘Step Pyramid’ works perfectly on dance floors keeping the melodies minimal, but with bright synth sounds and vocal cut up loops lock you into a breezing groove. Collage video on YouTube, ‘Universal Vision’ on side B is also a DJ friendly track with synth, vocal cut ups and guitars, plus a funky bass-line. ‘Step Pyramid’ is remixed by a Japanese duo Traks Boys, who are also know as the member of a city-pop group sssurrounddd. Uplifting remix, adding acid sequences and building up rhythm tracks for the dance floors. ‘Universal Vision’ gets remixed by The Beat Broker a veteran producer from the bay area who has close relationship with Sorcerer and made a Japan debut last year with his remix compilation CD “Nice to Mix You (Remix Works 2009-2012)”. The dreamy synth, dance floor friendly rhythm approach pulls out the tasty parts the original has. Sorcerer is also releasing an EP in March on A Kind Of Presence a sub-label of Tokyo based up coming label Diskotopia. Suddenly getting busy rom this release, he is entering into a new phase.　

昨年夏にミニ・アルバム『Weird Energy』をリリースし、日本の蒸し暑いサマー・シーズンを心地良くクールダウンしてくれたサンフランシスコのメロウ・エレクトロニック・デュオ、ウィンドサーフ。その一翼を担うのがソーサラーことダン・ジャッドだ。ファイストとも縁が深いソフトロック・バンド、コール＆レスポンスの元ギタリストにして、2011年にコズミック・ポップ・バンド、ショックを結成。昨年末にデビュー・シングル「Heaven」をリリースしたばかりの彼は、バンド活動を通じて育まれたメロディのセンスをダンストラックへと投影することで、その個性を際立たせてきた。

　ソーサラーとしては、ロンドンのレーベル、Tirkより、2007年に『White Magic』、2008年に『Neon Leon』という2枚のアルバムをリリース。さらに、クリエイティヴ・パートナーであるサム・グロウとのプロジェクトであるウィンドサーフとしても、2008年にノルウェーのレーベル、Internasjonalからアルバム『Coastlines』をリリースしたほか、2009年には齊藤健介こと9dwと彼が主宰するレーベル、CATUNEの尽力により初の日本ツアーを行ったが、本作「Step Pyramid / Universal Vision EP」は長らく待望されていたソーサラー名義の久しぶりとなるリリースだ。

　Aサイドの「Step Pyramid」は、ソーサラーらしいメロディックな展開を抑制し、明度の高いシンセサイザーやヴォーカル・サンプルのエディット、ループでフロアを爽やかなハメに導く、オールラウンドな現場仕様の1曲。一方、YouTubeにコラージュ映像がアップされているBサイド「Universal Vision」も、ファンキーなベースラインを下敷きにした短い尺のトラックに散りばめたギターやヴォーカル・サンプル、シンセサイザーの断片がブリージンな印象を残すDJツールとなっている。そして、「Step Pyramid」のリミックスはシティポップ・グループ、(((さらうんど)))の一員としても活躍著しい日本のデュオ、トラックス・ボーイズが担当。アシッド・シーケンスを加えるなど、変化を付けながらリズム・トラックをフロア向けにアップデートし、高揚感あふれる好リミックスとなっている。さらに「Universal Vision」のリミックスを手掛けるのは、ソーサラーと親交が深く、昨年、リミックス集『Nice to Mix You(Remix Works 2009-2012）』で日本デビューを果たしたベイエリアのベテラン・クリエイター、ビート・ブローカーが担当。こちらもドリーミーなシンセサイザーとフロア・フレンドリーなリズム・アプローチを通じて、オリジナルに凝縮された旨味をさらに増幅させた内容となっている。なお、ソーサラーは、3月に東京の新興レーベル、Diskotopiaのサブディヴィジョン、A Kind Of Presenceより「Island Rescue EP」のリリースも予定。本作を期に、にわかに活動を活発化させながら、新たなフェーズへと突入する。(Text : Yu Onoda)

Sorcerer - Step Pyramid / Universal Vision EP by catunerecords

  When people look into UK’s dance music, they tend to focus on London’s cosmopolitan scene, but each city has it’s own history and character. How about Scotland? If you ask a UK dance music lover about Scotland, you will hear about Glasgow’s well known Sub Club running since 1987 with the veteran resident DJs like Harri & Domenic, Optimo and Slam. Soma Recordings is a Techno oriented label that Slam founded in 1991 sent out Funk D’ Void, Alex Smoke, Silicone Soul to Gary Beck representing the scene. Glasgow Underground is another label to be mentioned, started by Kevin Mackay in 1997, who co-produced Mylo’s “Destroy Rock & Roll”. This Deep House label has been releasing local producers like DJ Q and Romanthony’s classic album “R.Hide In Plain Site”, and also material from US producer like Mateo & Matos that are known worldwide.

  Compared to the 90’s Scotland had been a little quiet for a while, until new talent Neil McDonald as know as Lord Of The Isles appeared. Born in Scotland and after living in many cities, he reached Edinburgh which is the second largest city next to Glasgow. He has been living in Edinburgh for almost 20 years, producing music since 1995 and have been throwing his regular party “Raw” every Saturday. He’s a DJ/Producer that suddenly rose up in the Disco/Balearic scene in 2010, with a bag full of original tracks and re-edits.

  McDonald has already released “Pacific Affinity EP” from a Japanese label Ene managed by DJ Chida. ‘To & Flo’ from the EP was featured on DJ Harvey’s mix CD “XMIX01”, and ‘Ultraviolet’ that was released from LA’s prime label Adlut Contemporary was heavily played by big DJs from Andrew Weatherall, Daniel Wang, David Mancuso and getting worldwide attention that same year. Constantly releasing from labels like Solardisco, American Standard, Sleazy Beats, CockTail d’Amore, London’s record shop label Phonica, and Edinburgh based Firecracker’s sub division Unthank, he has also released “Hot Blob EP” on his own Little Strong Recordings.

  His sound production has a very visual element based on his talent also as a designer, and as the project name ‘Lord Of The Isles’ shows his commitment to the Scottish Myth leads to the mystic atmospheric transy synthesizer and low bottom medium slow groove. It’s delicate and the slightly twisted euphoria grabs the listener’s heart. Disco/Balearic sound from the North reminds Norway’s Lindstrøm and Todd Terje, but when you hear “Geek Chic/Radio Lollipop EP” you’ll know that the Scottish sound has a totally different soundscape and trippy feel. Hokaido-KUNIYUKI aka Kuniyuki Takahashi crafted a hypnotic acid remix of ‘Geek Chic’ cools down our heat from the top of our head. Vakula’s remix of ‘Radio Lolipop’ features a mysterious Japanese monologue and cicada hum in Autumn and twists the space-time. Everyone of them are from the Northern part of the world, bringing in a new Balearic touch to this record. 

イギリスのクラブ・ミュージックは、コスモポリタンなロンドンのシーンにばかり注目が集まりがちであるが、その土地土地に歴史があり、特徴がある。では、イギリス北部のスコットランドについてはどうか？クラブ・ミュージック好きのイギリス人に尋ねたら、まず間違いなく挙がるのが、1987年から現在も続くグラスゴーの名門クラブ、サブ・クラブ、そのレジデントであるハリー&ドミニク、オプティモ、スラムといったベテランDJたち。そして代表的なレーベルでは、1991年にスラムが設立し、ファンク・デ・ヴォイド、アレックス・スモーク、シリコン・ソウル、ゲイリー・ベックらを輩出したテクノ・オリエンテッドなレーベル、Soma Recordings。そして、のちにマイロのアルバム『Destroy Rock & Roll』の共同プロデュースを手掛けることになるケヴィン・マッケイが1997年に設立したGlasgow Undergroundだろう。このディープ・ハウス・レーベルからは地元プロデューサー、DJ Qやロマンソニーの名作アルバム『R.Hide In Plain Site』やマテオ＆マトスといったUSのプロデューサーの作品が世界的によく知られている。

　そして、90年代と比較すると、その動きが沈静化していたスコットランドから新たに登場した才能がロード・オブ・ジ・アイルズことニール・マクドナルドだ。生まれ育ったスコットランドを転々とし、グラスゴーに次ぐ第二の都市、エディンバラに腰を据えて、20年近くになるという彼は、地元で毎週土曜のレギュラー・パーティ「Raw」を長らく続けながら、1995年から音楽制作を開始。オリジナルとリエディットの膨大なストック曲を携えて、2010年代のディスコ、バレアリック・シーンで急浮上してきたDJ、プロデューサーだ。

　彼はすでに日本でも、DJ Chida主宰のレーベル、Eneより2011年に「Pacific Affinity EP」を発表。収録曲の「To & Flo」がDJハーヴィーのミックスCD『XMIX01』にフィーチャーされたほか、LAの優良レーベル、Adlut Contemporaryから同年リリースされた「Ultraviolet」が、アンドリュー・ウェザオールやダニエル・ワン、デヴィッド・マンキューソといったビッグネームにヘヴィー・プレイされるなど、ワールド・ワイドな評価を獲得。そのほかにもSolardisco、American Standard、Sleazy Beats、CockTail d’Amore、ロンドンのレコード・ショップによるレーベル、Phonicaや地元エジンバラのレーベル、Firecrackerのサブ・ディヴィジョン、Unthankから作品を発表し、自身主宰のレーベル、Little Strong Recordingsからも「Hot Blob EP」をリリースするなど、活動は非常に精力的だ。

　その作風は、デザイナーでもあるという彼のヴィジュアルを喚起する音作りとプロジェクト名である「島々の君主」が示唆するスコットランド神話への傾倒が、空間を活かしたトランシーなシンセサイザーと重心の低いミッド～スローのグルーヴを通じて、ミスティックな音の流れへと変換。繊細にして、どこかねじれのある陶酔感が聴き手をぐっと惹きつける。北の地のディスコ、バレアリックといえば、ノルウェーのリンドストロームやトッド・テリエがよく知られているが、スコットランド産のそれは描かれるサウンドスケープやトリップ感覚がノルウェー産とひと味もふた味も異なっていることは新作「Geek Chic/Radio Lollipop EP」を聴けば、お分かり頂けるだろう。頭の先から温度が下がっていくような「Geek Chic」のヒプノアシッドなリミックスは北海道KUNIYUKIこと高橋クニユキ、妖しげな日本語のモノローグと秋に鳴く蟬の声をフィーチャーし、時空を狂わせる「Radio Lolipop」のリミックスはウクライナのプロデューサー、Vakulaがそれぞれ担当。全員が北国出身という新感覚のバレアリック・フィールが新たな刺激をもたらしてくれる、そんな1枚となっている。(Text : Yu Onoda)

Lord Of The Isles - Geek Chic / Radio Lollipop EP by catunerecords

Hatchback and Sorcerer’s project Windsurf’s “Weird Energy” made a smash hit in Japan this summer. Their success has revealed the eclectic dance music nurtured in the US west coast, crossing the beach culture and psychedelic culture. Ryan Bishop as know as The Beat Broker is another significant creator in the San Francisco scene alongside with Windsurf.

 The Beat Broker was born in 1975 and raised in Southern California. His earliest musical influences include radio synth pop and soon after, mid-80s hip-hop by such artists as Eric B. & Rakim and EPMD. It’s these production styles of sampling, updating and remixing that would later become a huge influence on his own work. Working at the local college radio station in the late 90s opened the door to a variety of electronic music. He has been known as a member of the website ‘The Dream Chimney’ that started introducing obscure dance music in 1997 together with Windsurf, where they got attention from disco diggers worldwide. In year 2000, he formed Broker/Dealer with his production partner Ryan Fitzgerald. Mixing the dubby west coast house music from San Francisco’s rave scene, and melodic techno from Germany represented by the likes of Kompakt label, 2003 album “Initial Public Offering” was highly acclaimed by west coast’s top DJs as Doc Martin. 

 At the same time, he started producing disco, synthesizer music, old school electro, fusion inspired music as The Beat Broker. Although most of his edit works from Lee Ritenour “COUNTDOWN (CAPTAIN FINGERS)” to Tatsuro Yamashita “Love Talkin’” are not release, he is known for his good taste of selecting the sample and his floor friendly production. After joining the compilation album “Drive The 5” released from Sentrall, a label founded by one of The Dream Chimney’s members Rollmottle, he has released many original tracks from Belgium label Flexx and many other obscure house/disco labels.

 This piece is a compilation of his remix works and is a Japan debut release on Catune, which is Kensuke Saito’s project 9dw’s label. Joining 9dw’s remix album “rmx” in 2010 lead to this release. Including Sorcerer’s new band Shock’s remix there are 5 unreleased tunes. His production smoothly crosses over from disco, west coast house, to melodic techno, and it has an adult oriented mellow vibe that blends with cosmic synthesizer sounds. His first full length original album “Limited Time” will be released on UK label Bear Funk in 2013, and this compilation on Catune is a Japan exclusive project and will be presenting his talent ahead of the world. この夏、アルバム『Weird Energy』が日本でスマッシュ・ヒットを記録したハッチバックとソーサラーの2人によるプロジェクト、ウインドサーフ。彼らの活躍によって、ビーチ・カルチャーとサイケデリック・カルチャーのクロスポイントである米国西海岸で育まれてきた折衷的なダンス・ミュージックの一端が明らかになりつつあるが、ライアン・ビショップことザ・ビート・ブローカーはウインドサーフの2人と共にサンフランシスコシーンで重要な役割を担ってきたクリエイターだ。

　1975年に南カリフォルニアで生まれ、10年以上に渡ってサンフランシスコで活動を続けてきた彼は、エリックB & ラキムやEPMDといったヒップホップ・アーティストを通じて、サンプリングやビート・メイクの洗礼を受け、その後、地元のカレッジ・ラジオ局に勤務したことで、エレクトロニック・ミュージックに目覚めたというバックグラウンドを持つ。彼の名は、1997年よりいち早くオブスキュアなダンス・ミュージックを紹介し、全世界のディスコ・ディガーの注目を集めてきた老舗サイト、The Dream Chimneyの一員としてウインドサーフの2人と共に知られるようになり、2000年にはパートナーであるライアン・フィッツジェラルドとのユニット、ブローカー/ディーラーを結成。サンフランシコのレイヴ・シーン発祥のダビーな西海岸ハウスとドイツのコンパクト・レーベルに象徴されるメロディックなテクノを融合させた2003年のアルバム『Initial Public Offering』で西海岸のトップDJ、ドック・マーティンらの高い評価を得た。

　その一方で、彼はディスコやシンセサイザー・ミュージック、オールドスクールなエレクトロやフュージョンの影響が色濃いソロ名義のThe Beat Brokerとしても製作もスタート。その多くは未発表だが、リー・リトナー「COUNTDOWN(CAPTAIN FINGERS)」や山下達郎「Love Talkin’」など、様々なリエディット・ワークスを通じて、ネタ選びのセンスやフロアフレンドリーなプロダクションで広範な支持を獲得。さらには、The Dream Chimneyの一員であるロールモットル主宰のレーベル、セントラルのコンピレーション『Drive The 5』への参加を皮切りに、2000年代後半よりベルギーのFlexxをはじめ、世界に点在するオブスキュアなハウス/ディスコ・レーベルからオリジナルをリリースし、その活動を活発化させていった。

　本作はそんな彼がこれまでに手掛けてきたリミックスを集めたコンピレーションにして、2010年に齋藤健介のプロジェクト、9dwのリミックス・アルバム『rmx』への参加を端に発し、彼のレーベルであるCatuneからリリースされる待望の日本デビュー盤だ。間もなくリリースされるソーサラーの新バンド、ショックのリミックスを含む4曲の未発表曲を収録した本作は、ディスコやウェストコーストハウス、メロディックなテクノをしなやかに横断するビートアプローチとアダルトオリエンテッドなメロウネスやシンセサイザーのコズミックフィールが溶け合ったプロダクションに彼らしい個性が色濃く表れている。なお、来年以降、初のオリジナルアルバム『Limited Time』が英国のレーベル、ベアファンクよりリリースされるということだが、本作は世界に先駆けて彼の才能を伝える日本独自の好企画アルバムだ。この作品は、また、ロサンゼルスの100％シルク、アダルト・コンテンポラリー、プリンス・トーマスが主宰するノルウェーのインターナショナルといった世界各地のオルタナティヴな優良レーベルを巡るガイド盤としても楽しむことが出来る1枚といえるだろう。(Text : Yu Onoda)

From fusion to techno-pop, and techno-pop to electro-funk: everlasting longing to the late 70s to mid 80s innovative music, full of analogue and digital sounds sparking and crossing over. Symbolized by the retro-futuristic digital art of innocent future-oriented movies like “TRON”, and as YMO was, Japanese culture’s eclecticness mixing oriental and modern flavors. Mixing some sort of exotic flavors into breezin’ tracks, San Francisco’s producer duo Windsurf came up with their original west coast Balearic sound. Sam Grawe aka Hatchback and Daniel Judd aka Sorcerer, put together coastlines in 2008, and after 4 years they’re back with a new album “Weird Energy”.

Sam is the kind of guy that has that sense and knowledge of design, as he was the former editor-in-chief of “dwell” magazine specialized in modern design & architecture, a vintage synthesizer collector, and also a huge fan of Japanese fusion music. Dan was a former member of a soft rock band Call And Response that was close relationship with Feist, and now a member of a cosmic pop band SHOCK which was featured on NME right after they formed the band in 2011. This album crosses over their different back ground and stimulates a vivid visual image, from the sophisticated sound design, luscious melodies, and live instruments well arranged resonating and shedding bright light. Including 6 tracks, featuring long waited ‘Weird Energy’ a definite summer anthem which spread out with their self made video on Youtube back in 2009, and a mellow chill out tune ‘Vapour Trails’ which was released as a 7 inch from the FADER magazine label. Packaging the west coast beach culture and psychedelic culture’s open air atmosphere, Windsurf will appeal in the bright sunny season coming soon.

フュージョンからテクノ･ポップへ、そしてテクノ・ポップからエレクトロ・ファンクへ。さらにはアナログとデジタルが交錯し、スパークすることでイノヴェイティヴな音楽が生まれた70年代後期から80年代中期の音楽シーンに対する尽きない憧憬。無邪気な未来志向がまぶしい映画『トロン』に象徴されるレトロなデジタル・アート、YMOがそうであったように、オリエンタリズムとモダニズムを同居させたジャパニーズ・カルチャーの折衷性……ある種のエキゾチズムを喚起させるそういった要素をブリージンなトラックに溶かし込むことで、ウェストコースト・オリジナルなバレアリック感覚を育んできたサンフランシスコのプロデューサー・デュオ、ウィンドサーフ。それぞれ、ハッチバック、ソーサラーというソロ・プロジェクトでも素晴らしい作品を発表しているサム・グロウとダン・ジャッドが、2008年の『coastlines』から4年振りとなるアルバム『Windsurf』をここに完成させた。

　モダン・デザイン＆アーキテクチャーを扱う『ドウェル』誌の元編集長にして、ヴィンテージ・シンセサイザーのコレクター、さらにはジャパニーズ・フュージョンのマニアでもあるセンスとデザインの人、サム。そして、ファイストとも縁が深いソフトロック・バンド、コール＆レスポンスの元メンバーにして、2011年の結成後すぐにNMEが取り上げたコズミック・ポップ・バンド、ショックの一員でもあるバンド畑出身のダン。この作品は、そんな彼らの異なるバックグラウンドが鮮やかなヴィジュアル・イメージを喚起する洗練されたサウンド・デザインと甘美なメロディラインや生楽器を交えたアレンジメントとなって響き合い、まばゆい光を放っている。収録されているのは、2009年にYouTubeで公開された自作ミュージック・ビデオが大きな話題になり、その後、長らくリリースが待望されていた夏のフロア・アンセム「Weird Energy」、米国の音楽誌「FADER」のレーベルより7インチでリリースされたメロウ・チルアウトな「Vapour Trails」を含む珠玉の6曲。ビーチ・カルチャーとサイケデリック・カルチャーのクロスポイントである米国西海岸らしいオープンエアのアトモスフィアをたっぷりふくんだ本作は、日差しがいっぱいに降り注ぐこれからの季節にその魅力が最大限に引き出されることになるはずだ。(text by Yu Onoda)

 West coast in US is a place where the beach culture and psychedelic culture crosses. Especially in the past few years, San Francisco has enhanced in the electronic music scene and has grown a new crossover sound that can be called something as West coast Balearic sound. One of the most pioneering units of this movement is Windsurf: formed by two producers, Sam Grawe and Daniel Judd. Each of them have their solo projects, Sam as Hatchback and Daniel as Sorcerer, but in 2008 they got together and released their first album coastlines from Norway’s disco producer/DJ: Prince Thomas’s label Internasjonal. Going back and forth from analogue to digital, beautiful layers of synth, guitars and spaced out rhythm tracks resonate, and creating mellow chill out oceanic dance music got good attention all over the world. 

 ’Weird Energy’ with a self made video spread out widely via YouTube in 2009, and it is finally coming out after three years. Featuring acidy sequence and rippling synth sounds, the spacey electro-funk slowly expands into a fusion-disco sound as a summer anthem in 2012. You can hear the significant evolution in their sound, and this will be the lead single from their up coming album this summer.

 Also there are two remixes by Kensuke Saito’s solo project 9dw and Max Essa. 9dw is known for it’s quality electric fusion/boogie sound worldwide, and curating Windsurf’s Japan Tour in 2009. 9dw remix has a trippy guitar solo and a powerful bottom for the dance floor. Kawasaki(Japan) based Max Essa, whose single “Feel It In Your Body / Heartache” being picked up by the likes of Andrew Weatherall and David Mancuso came out with a dope remix featuring the original refined melody. Both remixes will surely be a banger on the floor.

　そんな彼らの3年振りとなる新作「Weird Energy」は、2009年にYouTubeで公開された自作ミュージック・ビデオが大きな話題になり、その後、長らくリリースが待望されていた1曲。アシッドなシークエンスと波打つシンセサイザーをフィーチャーしたスペーシーなエレクトロ・ファンクが高度を上げながらフュージョン・ディスコへと展開する2012年屈指のサマー・アンセムだ。また、この作品は夏にリリースを控えた新作アルバムからの先行シングルでもあり、ウィンドサーフのめざましい進化が実感出来る。

　そして、2曲のリミックスを手がけるのは、ハイ・クオリティなエレクトリック・フュージョン/ブギーが海外でも高く評価され、2009年にいち早くウィンドサーフの来日公演を実現させた斉藤健介のソロ・プロジェクト、9dw。そして、昨年リリースのシングル「Feel It In Your Body/Heatache」がアンドリュー・ウェザオールとデヴィッド・マンキューソにピックアップされた川崎在住の英国人プロデューサー、マックス・エッサ。中盤にトリッピーなギター・ソロをフィーチャーした9dwリミックスはボトムを増強し、よりストイックに。マックス・エッサによるリミックスは、オリジナルの洗練されたメロディ・ラインを活かしながらドープに。どちらもダンス・フロアで大いに活躍しそうな素晴らしいリミックスに仕上がっている。

Boris is a Japanese heavy rock band that has garnered a lot of praise from much of the major music media including Pitchfork, Spin, Rolling Stone, and NY times for its 2010 releases 『Attention Please』『Heavy Rocks』and 『New Album』. They were also featured on the cover of the December issue of American weekly magazine CMJ and the English online music magazine Kicking Against The Pricks, which picked the band’s album as an album of the year for 2011. Strong support from the media helped the band to carry out a world tour which saw them play in Europe, America, Canada, Australia and of course, their home country Japan. During that time, their new single “KIMI NO YUKUE” was promoted as a theme song for ‘ZENNIN SHIBOUDESU’, which will be released on the Nintendo 3DS and the Playstation Vita.

The band will release the label’s second 12 inch remix single ‘Looprider’. The first remix was done by CRUE-L boss Kenji Takimi and 9dw and West Japan based DJ/artist ALTZ was picked for the second remix. Known for not only releasing his own original albums and singles from labels like BEAR FUNK in UK and DFA in NY, but he is also a member of the highly regarded ALTZ.P, a project that started out quite recently.「Looprider (ALTZ - Fall in Love Mix)」begins with his signature tensive minimal funk sound that then develops into a somewhat trancey sound.

Sam aka Hachback from San Fransisco was also chosen to remix the song. He has been to Japan for his band Windsurf’s tour and released his secound album ‘Zeus And Appolo’, which came out last year. Apart from his production work, he is also known as a chief editor of Dwell, Interiror magazine, and analog synthesizer collector: Which somehow makes a lot of sense since his sound turns out to be some of the finest chill-out sound design. In ‘Looprider’ (Hatchback’s Pacific Wind Mix), he brings a gentle and peaceful dance track which represents West coast Balearic.

The original ‘Looprider’ piece, which is not included in this 12 inch, draws upon Black Metal influences, in particular Shoegazer linked sounds like French group Alcest and electronica sounds by Ulver from Norway. Black metal meets dance music scene, this 12inch promises to uncover new dimensions of Boris’ unique sound and approach.

昨年、海外リリースされた3枚のアルバム『Attention Please』と『Heavy Rocks』、『New Album』がピッチフォークやスピン、ローリング・ストーン、NYタイムズほか、欧米の主要音楽メディアで高く評価された日本のヘヴィー・ロック・バンド、Boris。米国CMJウィークリー誌12月19日発行号で表紙を飾ったほか、英国発の人気オンライン音楽マガジン、Kicking against the pricks.は『Attention Please』を2011年のアルバム・オブ・ザ・イヤーに選出。そんな追い風を受け、ヨーロッパ各国、アメリカ/カナダ、オーストラリア、そして日本と、国内外をツアーで回った彼らは、新曲「君の行方」が2月にNintendo 3DS/Playstation Vitaで発売されるゲームソフト『善人シボウデス』のイメージ・ソングに起用されるなど、その活動は実に精力的だ。そんななか、CRUE-Lオーナーの瀧見憲司と9dwが手がけた昨年10月の「Black Original」に続く、リミックス12インチシングル第2弾「Looprider」が登場する。

今回のリミキサーに起用されたのは、３枚のオリジナル・アルバムとイギリスのBEAR FUNKやニューヨークのDFAほか海外レーベルからのシングル・リリースで、国内外にその異才が知れ渡る関西のDJ/アーティスト、ALTZ。先日、新たなバンド・プロジェクト、その名もALTZ.Pでの活動もスタートさせたばかりの彼が手がけた「Looprider (ALTZ - Fall in Love Mix)」はじわじわと熱を帯びるミニマルなファンクがトランシーに振り切れる会心のリミックスだ。

さらにもう一組のリミキサーは、サンフランシスコのクリエイター、サム・グロウのソロ・プロジェクト、Hatchback。2009年に別プロジェクト、Windsurfの一員として来日経験もある彼は、昨年、セカンド・アルバム『Zeus And Appolo』をリリース。アメリカのインテリア雑誌、Dwellの編集長にして、アナログ・シンセサイザーのコレクターでもバックグラウンドが極上のチルアウトを約束するサウンド・デザインに結実。そんな創作活動の好調ぶりは米国ウェストコースト・バレアリカを体現するジェントルでピースフルなダンス・トラック「Looprider (Hatchback’s Pacific Wind Mix)」を生み出すに至っている。

本作には未収だが、オリジナルの「Looprider」は、エレクトロニカとも融合したノルウェーのUlverやシューゲイザー化したフランスのAlcestなどに代表されるブラックメタル最新進化形とも共振する1曲だ。そのリミックス盤が今度はクラブ・シーンを横断することで、どんな異化効果が生まれるのか。本作は好評を得たという「Black Original」リミックス同様、Borisの可能性を大きく広げる一枚でもある。

Boris “Looprider” Remix 12” out on Feb.2012 by catunerecords

Japanese heavy rock -band Boris are at the height of their creative powers. Their fans include some of the world’s top artists, such as Lou Reed, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and Portishead. They composed the soundtrack for the Japan Academy award winning film, “KOKUHAKU” and film director, Jim Jarmusch, asked them to record the music for his latest film, “Limits Of Control”.

March 2011 saw the release of a new L.P called “NEW ALBUM”. Highly regarded amongst Japanese fans of animation soundtracks the album has been described as a ‘virtual trip’, visual music with a defined Japanese aesthetic. The band’s dramatic evolution as been a hot topic for discussion amongst fans both old and new in Japan and abroad. The new 12” remix single “Black Original” expands the listener’s horizons even further, introducing synthesizers and industrial beats.

Highly respected Japanese DJ and producer, Kenji Takimi from the world renowned CRUE-L label, has contributed two mixes under his LUGER E-Go project guise. The “LUGER E-Go Remix” employs crazed tribal drums, new wave funk loops and a hypnotic bass -line to create a charged, psychedelic atmosphere, luring the listener into chaos. Takimi’s “LUGER E-Go Re-Boost” pushes things even further, increasing the sense of delirium.

Kensuke Saito, whose “9dw” project released an eponymous L.P of “electro fusion/boogie” in 2008 on the U.S Label, Wax Poetics, has a longstanding relationship with Boris. In 2009 they released a spilt single together called “Golden Dance Classics”, and Kensuke played synthesizers on the Boris LP, “Galaxians (Heavy Rocks)”. This working relationship led to the band inviting Kensuke to remix “Black Magic Original Woman” in the disco style he is so well know for, while maintaining the aggressive, rock feel of the original.

This release is most definitely primed for the dance floor and will surely see an even wider audience able to enjoy the unique delights of Boris.

ルー・リードやレディオヘッド、フレイミング・リップス、ポーティスヘッド、ナイン・インチ・ネイルズといった世界のトップ・アーティストに愛され、ジム・ジャームッシュの最新映画『リミッツ・オブ・コントロール』の音楽担当に起用。さらに日本アカデミー賞最優秀作品賞に選ばれた映画『告白』の挿入曲も担当するなど、世界の第一線で活躍する日本のヘヴィー・ロック・バンド、Boris。今年3月に同人音楽やアニメ・ソング、ヴィジュアル系といった日本固有の音楽、そこに広がるヴァーチャルなトリップ感覚を作品世界にフィードバックした新作アルバム、その名も『New Album』をリリース。彼らの劇的な進化は国内外、新旧リスナーの間で大きな話題となったが、この作品でオートチューンとシンセサイザー、そしてインダストリアルなビートによって、Borisの新たな地平を切り開いた「Black Original」のリミックス12インチ・シングルが登場する。

手がけるのは、今年設立20周年を迎える日本を代表するインディペンデント・レーベル、CRUE-Lオーナーにして、欧米のレフトフィールドなダンス・ミュージック・シーンで高く評価されているDJ/プロデューサー、瀧見憲司のプロジェクト、Luger-E-Go。そして、2008年リリースのアルバム『9dw』がアメリカのレーベル、Waxpoeticsよりライセンス・リリースされ、生音を活かしたハイ・クオリティーなプロダクションから繰り出されるエレクトリック・フュージョン/ブギーが海外に一躍知れ渡った斉藤健介のソロ・プロジェクト、9dwという2組だ。

Luger-E-Goは、マッド・トライバルなドラム・トラックとノイジーかつシンナー・サイケデリックな上モノ、そしてニュー・ウェイヴ・ファンクなベース・ループとヒプノティックなベースラインを曲中で交錯させながら、カオス空間に誘う「Luger-E-Go Remix」とその狂気性を更に増幅させたLuger-E-Go Re-Boost」の2曲を提供。一方の9dwは、2009年にBorisとのスプリット・シングル「Golden Dance Classics」のリリースや今年5月にアメリカのレーベル、Sergent Houseよりリリースされた更なるBorisの新作アルバム『Heavy Rocks』収録の「Galaxians」にシンセサイザーで参加。Borisをよく知る彼のアプローチは、原曲のアグレッシヴな勢いやロック・フィールを活かし、従来の作風から考えると、アッパーなディスコ・リミックス「Black Magic Original Woman」へとトランスフォーム。3曲ともにダンス・フロアの新たな起爆剤として、またクラブ・ミュージック・シーンからの返答を通じて、Borisの謎めいた世界の足がかりになる可能性に満ちた刺激的な一枚だ。(text : Yu Onoda)
